The Importance of Glutathione - Your Body’s Major Antioxidant

A water-soluble antioxidant called GLUTATHIONE IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT ANTIOXIDANTS for your body's healthy functioning and detoxification. It is made and stored in the liver.

Glutathione is a SIMPLE molecule that  is produced naturally all the time in your body. It is a combination of 3 amino acids:

  • Glycine

  • Cysteine 

  • Glutamine

Its antioxidant power resides in the SULPHUR it contains. Sulphur is a sticky molecule. It acts like fly paper and unwanted substances in the body stick onto it, including free radicals, and toxins such as mercury and other heavy metals.

Toxins attach to glutathione, which then transports them into bile and the stool, then out of the body. Bile elimination is most efficient in terms of detoxification of the materials it carries, as long as adequate amounts of DIETARY FIBRE are available in the intestines to escort the toxins out of the body and prevent re-absorption. 

When your liver gets overloaded and damaged, it is unable to do its job of detoxification. This can then lead you susceptible to cell disintegration from oxidative stress, free radicals, infections and even cancer risk. 

In children with autism, and in people with Alzheimer's or Parkinson's, glutathione is almost entirely deficient. 

All your body cells are capable of producing glutathione but liver glutathione production is essential to keep you alive and disease free. 

The Benefits of Glutathione: 

  • Research has shown that RAISED glutathione levels DECREASE MUSCLE DAMAGE, SHIELDS YOUR DNA, KEEPS YOU ENERGISED, REDUCES RECOVERY TIME, REDUCES PAIN AND INFLAMMATION, INCREASES STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE and shifts metabolism from fat production to muscle development.

  • It is also critical  in helping the immune system control inflammation, fight infections and reduce cancer risk.

Glutathione protects us from FREE RADICALS. It also recycles other essential antioxidants like C and E for re-use. 

Free radicals are DAMAGING particles, which come from the environment or are produced in the body. They can damage the cell membranes and DNA and even cause cell death.  

Although glutathione is found in HIGH CONCENTRATIONS in the liver, heart, brain and muscle tissues things like intense training, poor diet, pollution, toxins, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections, radiation - all deplete glutathione. The glutathione produced in your body can become easily drained by chemicals, mould, drugs, paracetamol and heavy metals, so a continued supply is necessary to neutralise all kinds of assaulting toxins.

When we are overwhelmed with too much oxidative stress inside the body or are exposed to too many free radicals and toxins from the environment, glutathione levels can become depleted. Issues with glutathione levels can lead to health conditions and chronic diseases, including cancers. 

How to get glutathione in your body?

Consuming direct glutathione is NOT the most effective way to raise your body's glutathione levels. This is because the process of digestion seems to break down most of it. 

The best way to get glutathione into your body is through its precursors, (i.e. the 3 amino acids that make up glutathione: glycine, glutamine and cysteineand other nutrients that help boost its production.
